Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson, an ironworker in Chillicothe on 20 February 1937. Her mother, Lillian Ryan worked as household helper. Nancy was the youngest of six siblings. Nancy was influenced by her father's music taste and records played in the house. At just 4 years old, she was certain she would be a singer. The talent she developed was cultivated due to her participation in the church choir. Following her win in a talent show on TV when she was 15, she started to regularly appear in Skyline Melodies, while still in highschool. It was at that time that she began to work in nightclubs at the at the same time. Following her graduation from high school aged 17 Nancy matriculated for one year at Ohio's Central State College now Central State University before going on to become a professional singer. Her first record was recorded in 1956 by the Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. The band performed with her throughout 1956 and 1957. Nancy made her debut record with Dot Records while in the group. Cannonball Adderley told her to move in New York to further her professional career. She moved to The Big Town in 1959. Within a short time, she was singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road near The Bronx. The representative of Adderley saw her singing and instantly signed her. He obtained a contract for the label Capitol records in 1960 and she debuted that year with the single. Guess Who? Capitol published five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Her first album was focused on R&B and then, with Adderley's influence, she started to take on jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 was instrumental to bring her to the forefront and her smash hit Tell Me the Truth was released in 1963. The following year, this led to her getting booked in the New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
