Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winner in jazz. Nancy Wilson was born on February 20, 1937, in Chillicothe OH to Olden Wilson, who was employed in an ironworks, and Lillian Ryan, a former domestic worker. Nancy was the eldest of six children. Nancy was greatly influenced as a girl by the music her dad played and loved at his home. When she was young she had already developed the impression of who she was and the things she wanted to be. The church choir was instrumental in developing her talent. After high school the singer began appearing regularly on Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when won the TV talent show. In the year she turned 15, Nancy began her professional career at nightclubs. Nancy dropped out of Central State University in Ohio after matriculating for an entire year. She made her first recording with the Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, with whom she performed from 1956 until 1958. Nancy released her first album on Dot Records while in the band. Cannonball Aderley suggested she move to New York so as to enhance her career. In 1959 she moved in The Big Town. In just a few months she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club which is located at Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company heard her sing and immediately signed her. The contract was signed with Capitol Records in the year 1960. she made her debut that year by releasing the single. Guess Who I Saw today Capitol has released five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. In the era of Adderley, Wilson began concentrating on R&B and then shifted her focus to jazz and torch music. Their collaboration in 1962 with Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley helped propel her to prominence and her breakthrough song Tell Me the Truth in 1963. This brought her a gig at New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America in the year following and she was a household name.
